Betty Jane Schulte was born May 11, 1924 in the County of Clayton, Township of Garnavillo, Iowa. She passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on May 2, 2018. Her elementary education was at St. Joseph School in Garnavillo and she culminated on May 28, 1937. She attended Garnavillo High School and graduated as one of 11 students in 1941. Until the time of her death she was one of 2 surviving members of that class.
Betty enlisted in the United States Coast Guard as a SPAR and served for almost 2 years before being discharged as Yeoman First Class. At the time of her discharge she was making $114.00 per month.
On February 9, 1946 she married Anthony Sojka in Ketchikan, Alaska. They were married for 56 years before his passing in September, 2002.
Tony and Betty had three daughters – Kathy, Paula and Pamela. She leaves six grandchildren – Shane, Morgan, Joshua, Jordan, Christian and Olivia and one great grand-daughter, Jocelyn.
Betty is one of four children and leaves behind a younger brother, Bill and numerous nieces and nephews. She worked as an Executive Secretary for over 40 years. She has lived in Garnavillo Iowa, Sitka Alaska, Los Angeles California and Petaluma California. Her hobbies included reading, gardening, crocheting, watching old movies and dancing. She also volunteered for 15 years at Petaluma Valley Hospital as well as Sacks Thrift Store, run by Hospice of Petaluma.
She will be missed dearly by numerous friends and family whom she leaves behind.
In lieu of flowers, donations will gratefully be accepted at Sacks Thrift Store (run by Hospice of Petaluma) or Petaluma Valley Hospital Auxiliary.
Visitation will be held, Tuesday, May 8, 2018 from 6pm to 8pm at Adobe Creek Funeral Home, 331 Lakeville St., Petaluma, CA. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at 10am at St. James Catholic Church, 125 Sonoma Mountain Parkway, Petaluma, CA. Following the reception in the church hall, the burial will take place at 2pm at Pleasant Hills Memorial Park, 1700 Pleasant Hill Rd., Sebatopol, CA. Online condolences at AdobeCreekFuneralHome.com
