Daryll R. Nockleby passed away at his home in Petaluma, Sunday, October 7, 2018. He was 82 years old. Beloved husband of Diane Nockleby (McDaniel). Much loved father of Kimberly Nordby and April Nockleby. Dearest grandfather to Shayla, Brynna, and Donovan Nordby. Daryll was born in Lidgerwood, North Dakota on January 3, 1936 and lived most of his childhood in Rutland, North Dakota. From age 12 he drove a truck for his father’s gravel business. He was proud that he and his father helped build Garrison Dam in North Dakota. Daryll joined the Air Force in 1956 and served until 1960 as an aircraft mechanic. His love for planes led him to take flying lessons and earn his piolot’s license. In 1959 he married the love of his life and on October 3, 2018, they celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. Daryll started his career as a firefighter in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1960. He served the Lincoln community until 1968 when he declared he had enough of the harsh mid-west winters and moved his wife Diane and daughter Kim to sunny California to start a career with the Petaluma Fire Department. He served the department for 28 years, becoming Fire Captain in 1974 and earning such recognition as Firefighter of the Year and Employee of the Month. Besides being a firefighter, Daryll’s passions were traveling (preferably on his Honda Gold Wing motorcycle) and classic cars (Ford’s only, of course.) He narrowly missed his goal of riding one million miles on his motorcycles, travelling to such places as Mexico, Baja, and parts of Europe. Friends and family are invited to attend the funeral service on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Hills Memorial Park & Mortuary, 1700 Pleasant Hill Road, Sebastopol, CA. Memorial contributions in Daryll’s memory may be made to the Les Lens Memorial Fund (benefitting the Petaluma Fire Department) 198 D Street, Petaluma, CA 94952 or Elim Lutheran Church, 504 Baker St, Petaluma, CA 94952.
