John Edward Alfrey
1949 – 2018

Beloved friend, husband, father and grandfather John Alfrey passed away at home on May 22nd with his wife Peggy by his side. John was born in Bishop, CA in 1949 and spent his childhood in Reseda, CA. He met his wife Margaret (Peggy) Holloway met at Zuma Beach where they spent many happy times in the surf.

John worked full-time through college in great restaurants, earning a Bachelor of Arts in History from California State Northridge in 1972.

Logically, John then combined his love of history, good food and drink with a long career in the wine industry which led from San Francisco to regional state positions based in Minneapolis and Detroit, and back to the Bay Area in 1977. John & Peggy raised their son Peter in San Bruno, CA where they lived for 24 years surrounded by wonderful neighbors who became life-long friends. He was an active sports fan, whether watching Peter’s Elks team play baseball on foggy days in San Bruno or cheering on the Golden State Warriors. Forever a L.A. Dodgers fan, John reluctantly bowed to Peter’s love of the Giants.

John is pre-deceased by his parents Leroy and Donna Alfrey and is survived by his wife Peggy, son Peter and his wife Jenny of Maine, his sister Carrie Hayman and her husband Ed of New Hampshire and their son Tim and his sons, and family in Oklahoma. John is also survived by the lights in his life…his grandchildren Charlotte and Benjamin Alfrey.
