John was born in Illinois on March 29th, 1951. He was the oldest of six siblings. His parents were John and Dolli McGivney. His family moved to Sonoma County where he resided for 50 years. He worked for Chevron Refinery for 25 years and loved doing his job. He was so proud to be there. He leaves behind his beloved wife Jil, his cherished daughter Jessica (Eric) and their son, Gavin. Jil and John met at the Aquarium in Petaluma and it was love at first sight and was married 17 months later in The Chapel at Yosemite fall. For the next 30 years they built a lifetime of many memories together. They loved spending time in the garden and going on trips to Disneyland.

He was an avid sports fan. His favorite teams were the Chicago Cubs, and whatever baseball league his grandson played for over the years. Before and after retirement he devoted himself to many Veteran’s organizations as follows: John McGivney, a life member of VVA Ch.#223, died at home on February 8, 2019 at age 67. He died of Agent Orange related cancer. The former Vice- President and Board member of Ch. #223 worked on projects including: over 20 years with the Food distribution program of the Redwood Food Bank, furniture program for veterans, coffee cart program at the Santa Rosa VA Clinic, Vet Connect of Sonoma County past Vice President and Board member, Quilt distribution for veterans at the VA clinic and hospital, annual Airshows at the Sonoma County Airport, Education program for VN Veterans at the local Santa Rosa J.C. and local high schools,  and many fund raising  programs of Ch.#223 over the years. John worked behind the scenes on many veteran projects throughout Sonoma County. John was also a member of AMVETS Post 40 and VFW in Sonoma. He was the recipient of the 2012 California State Council Vietnam Veterans of America Award for Member of the Year. John joined the Navy and became an Aviation Structural Aircraft Mechanic-AME 3 and served in country Vietnam. He was released from reserve duty in 1975. He worked tirelessly for all veterans all generations over the years. He was a great advocate for veterans and their families.
