a dearly beloved husband, passed away peacefully at home in Petaluma, July 8, 2018 with his loving wife and son at his side. Karl was 93 years old. Born in Borlange, Dalarna, Sweden on September 22nd, 1924 to Carl Sixten and Gerda Elisabet (Bergkvist) Larsson, Karl was educated and worked in the steel mill town of Domnarvet. Karl worked many jobs, including paper routes, well drilling and serving in the Swedish army during WWII. He met his future wife, Irma Johnson, while on a ski trip in 1947. Irma returned to her home in Chicago, IL and Karl followed, immigrating there in 1949. They were married in 1951 and had two children. Karl was employed by Ryerson Steel and gladly accepted a transfer to sunny California in 1957. They purchased a house in Claremont, CA. At the time, coin laundries were becoming a popular trend, so Karl and Irma opened two in Pomona, CA. In 1964, they moved to Grand Prairie, TX where Karl managed the opening of a new steel warehouse. The family shares fond memories of touring Texas in their truck and camper. Eventually, they settled in Santa Rosa, where Karl worked for Van Bebber Bros. Steel in Petaluma, retiring in 1990.
Karl enjoyed traveling, taking many trips to Sweden or visiting family stateside. He was proud of his heritage and very proud to be an American. He was a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge #1166 in Oak Lawn, IL. He enjoyed relaxing in Gualala, CA with his in-laws where he spent many hours abalone-ing and fishing. Karl successfully tended a large garden with bountiful tomatoes, onions and garlic. He excelled at crossword puzzles, skiing, and was an avid runner – maintaining good health until the end. He will be remembered for his determination in all things he did.
Surviving Karl are his loving wife of 67 years Irma Larson of Petaluma, CA; son Dana Larson of Petaluma, CA and daughter Nancy (Jeff) Kelly of Madison, WI; grandchildren Jessica (Matt) Paschen of Twelve Mile, IN and Paul Kelly of Middleton, WI; and two great granddaughters Annemarie and Magnolia Paschen. Karl was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Svenolov.
Private services have been held and a family gathering will be in August. Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Petaluma, 416 Payran St., Petaluma, Ca. 94952 or a charity of your choice.
