Marleen Rae Smith, age 78, died on June 30, 2015 in Petaluma, CA, after a brief stay in the hospital.

Marleen was born and raised in Stockton, California, where she attended local schools. She and Gene were married in 1956 and soon moved to the foothills of California, Fresno, and Sacramento before settling in Petaluma in 1964. They have lived in the same home for over 50 years.

Marleen is survived by Gene, her loving husband of 59 years. She is also survived by their three children, Jerry Smith and his wife, Leslie; Pam (Smith) Kahl and her husband Dave; and Sandy (Smith) Dunaway and her fiance Kevin Verke. Together they have six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Marleen was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Steve Dunaway, and her parents, Delmar and Elona Long.
Marleen loved music and sang in many choirs during her life. She was a member of Elim Lutheran Church, sang in the church choir and was a founding member of the Wings of Glory gospel choir.

Marleen loved children, and during her life, she inspired and mentored many. She made many friends over the years and will forever be remembered as Mar, Molly, and Nanny.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, July 11, 2015, 10:00 am, at Elim Lutheran Church, 504 Baker Street, Petaluma, CA. A reception in the Fellowship Hall will immediately follow the service. Family and friends are all welcome to attend and celebrate Marleen’s life. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Marleen’s name to either Elim Lutheran Church Youth or Hospice of Petaluma.
