Michael Freitas died suddenly of head trauma on April 6th after falling at home. He was 38 years old. Michael was born in Petaluma and raised there until the age of 12, but St. Helena was truly his home where he grew up playing sports- his main passion football, then baseball- happily graduating from St. Helena High School in 1997.

Michael served proudly with the United States Marines Corps from 1997 to 2005 achieving the rank of Sergeant. He served 3 tours in Iraq and Afghanistan with the 5th Marines, deployed from Camp Pendleton after 911. He received many medals and commendations as a result of his combat duty while there.

After his honorable discharge from the military, Mike went on to serve as a Deputy Sheriff for Sonoma County where he excelled in criminal containment at the county jail. He would intimidate rowdy inmates with his unwavering presence, telling them “If I’m bleeding at the end of this you will be bleeding worse” which proved to be true on many occasion.

He loved the outdoors, and enjoyed mountain biking, hiking, and camping. Body building was a lifestyle for him as he always pushed himself to lift more than others – his muscular body was proof.

Mike is survived by his son Cole Walker Freitas (12), daughter Kayla Madison Freitas (9), fiancé Kimberly Bosley, parents Cyndy and Robert Holmes, sisters Dana’ya (Rui) Bastos-Amaro and Jenna Holmes, nephews Tiago, Gabriel and Dominic, grandmother JoAnn Richtik, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that a donation of any amount be made in memory of Sgt. Michael Freitas to the Wounded Warrior Project at www.woundedwarriorproject.org/.

Semper Fi our hero and beloved son. Be at peace with your soul. We all miss you dearly. A celebration of Michael’s life will be held in St. Helena CA. at a later date.
